The Making of a 9" Nantucket Creel Purse

1 - Two 9" Creel Purses

The beautiful 9 inch purse is made w/cane and has leather straps & hinges. The lid & base are walnut. (left - new; right has 9-year aged patina.

2 - Creel purses are made on a Puzzle Mold.

A mold that comes apart.....This allows you to make a basket that is wider at the base, than at the rim.

3 - Base attached to the mold.

The base is attached to the mold with screws and washers (to protect the wood). The more rounded or sloped edge of the base faces the mold, and will face upward into the basket when completed.

4 - Cane staves inserted in the base.

Notice the use of non-tapered staves along the flatter edges of the base, and tapered staves at the sharp curves.

5 - The weaving is started.

The staves are held in place by rubber bands.

6 - Basket woven and packed...

but still on the mold.

7 - Basket removed from the mold...

...and ready for the rim and leather.....

8 - Back of purse...

....showing the rim and leather hinges attached.

9 - Lid with polyurethane coating.

Notice the holes for the leather hinges and clasp.

10 - Purse with final coat of Polyurethane.

11 - Finished!!
